2017 Deloitte Cyber Security Summer Internship

Updated: Jun 6, 2018

I was intrigued by the family culture at Deloitte after speaking to some of my senior who had gone through the Deloitte's internship program. As Deloitte is the largest professional service network in the world, I felt that an internship at Deloitte was a great platform for me to gain deeper insights into the risk management and cyber security field.

I was interning at the Risk Advisory (RA) within Deloitte in 2017, during which I was assigned to a couple of major engagements and had the opportunity to put my programming knowledge into practice and perform actual implementation for the clients. My job scope included the handing of cyber breach and tasks which are normally assigned to full-time engineer. I feel that it was an enriching experience to be part of Deloitte's summer internship program as I got to learn a lot of technical knowledge and gain valuable hands-on cyber security experience through my engagements. I also had the chance to participate in numerous firm events to bond and forge friendships with my colleagues and fellow interns.

In addition, I really like how interns are treated just like full-time engineer and get assigned actual and meaningful tasks which are crucial and beneficial to the advisory. The most memorable part of my internship was when my engagement team completed our system rebuild project for a major client. Even though I only joined the team for the final three weeks, I still felt a strong sense of achievement after the signing-off my first cyber security project. The best part of the internship was the Off-Peak Party where everyone in the Risk Advisory put their work aside and came together for a night of fun and celebrations. The time spent working on a project with other interns from various departments for the Mentor Appreciation Day, as well as other corporate events, form some of the most memorable parts of my internship!

Of course, there are some challenges that I met during my internship, being in the RA team, I handled specialized case which demanded skill sets that had not been taught in the general IT curriculum in school. Hence, this was challenging at times when I was faced with a new existed code or system which I had not seen before. However, the seniors and mentors were always ready and willing to give their advice and guidance to help me overcome these challenges.

My last few days at Deloitte mainly involved saying goodbye to the friends I had made and taking pictures with them. I was sad about leaving my team and the Deloitte life, but hopefully this experience would open more doors for me in the future. My biggest takeaway would be the new long-term relationships and connections which I had forged with my colleagues and fellow interns at Deloitte.

My advice for students who want an internship with Deloitte or other large multinational firms:

1. Be ready, have your resume/portfolio/CV ready to go ALL THE TIME.

2. Always take initiative in everything that you do.

3. Talk to new people and make connections, be it managers, seniors, or fellow interns.

4. Make a log of everything which you have learnt at the end of each school day or internship.

5. School grades are important, that's usually the first indicator of your performance.

6. Keep in mind that you are not the smartest person in the world, stay in learning mode everyday.
